How Do You Know that You Are a Healer?

by Sophie on November 2, 2011

How do you know that you are  a healer? I was asked recently.

I think when we ARE healers, we spend most of our life knowing that we are different. Then later on we gradually become aware of certain abilities and talents that others don’t seem to have. Like being psychic, knowing stuff about people, seeing or hearing angels or guides, making people feel markedly better even if we don’t know how we are doing it.

Now there is a big difference between being a healer which is what you are, like being a man or a woman or being American or being musical or being academic and WORKING as a healer, which we never have to do even if we are healers. Just like you don’t have to be a musician just because you have musical talent.

How did I know I was a healer? Because healers told me I was! It happens a lot that a healer will recognize an emerging healer and tell them they are a healer, share experiences, try to guide them on the way. Often we don’t believe the first person who says it! haha! Then it happens again and we start paying attention… It’s a classic story 🙂:) My acupuncturist told me when I was about 29 that I was a healer and that I could do what she did. I laughed. But soon after, friends started telling me that I had helped them get better in ways that I was not even aware of having done.

4 years later, when my homeopath, who had never met my acupuncturist, told me all the same things, I started paying attention.

Then signs, symbols, dreams started to appear. I became friends with healers, I was watching them and realized that I was jealous of them, wishing I could be them, do what they did, have their life style (which I do now, by the way!). That was a strong sign that I was recognizing something in them that was speaking to me deeply.

Two years later my Reiki Master was telling me all the same things my acupuncturist and homeopath had told me… I’d heard it all 3 times… I decided to believe all 3 of them from now on. Besides: what did I have to lose? It was very uncomfortable being who I was at the time. Like still being a teenager who did not know what she wanted to be if she was ever going to grow up.

Most healers I know go through a phase of feeling like they won’t be understood if and when they give in to the knowing that they are healers and let themselves blossom into who they are. I would say anyone who is in the process of changing their lives (more education, new job, new place to live, having kids, changing religion etc) has similar fears. That’s why it’s important to:
1- stay in touch with your intuition and know that what you are doing/learning is right for YOU.
2- watch the results of those changes in your life to make sure that they are positive, mostly pleasant and WHAT YOU WANT to do with your life.
3- create support from people who understand your new experiences and learning. That’s why I teach to groups instead of individuals: so my students can support each other as well as having me help them.

There are many teachers and many healing modalities. So you need to choose who and what suits you best if you decide to learn and develop your talents with someone.

It’s also often a question of timing: feeling ready. Or being desperate to move on. Or being so fed up with being in limbo that we just want to learn and find out what it’s all about.

All this is really why I offer my course “Awakening the Healer Within” . It’s a lot of what I know and it’s everything I wish I was told and taught 14 or 15 years ago when I was still wondering what was ‘wrong with me”. Nothing was wrong with me, it turned out to be! If you want to know if you are  healer, you can take my: “Are you a Healer?” test here.

Within the last 7 months I’ve been on a spiritual journey. I’ve studied my religion and other religions. My conclusion, God is love(or whatever you want to call Him) and in many religions He calls us to peace and love of all He has created. I find myself at peace knowing that anything is possible. It’s been exciting feeling the healing in my body. Love, forgiveness, and caring for one another can be very healing as well. Understanding all that is possible is a journey in itself. Thank you for this blog, I’m starting to feel less crazy and more like a child of God who is trying to understand her heritage. May your gift grow stronger.

Hi Nina!
Thank you for reading my blog. It can be unsettling to suddenly experience the Divine and at the same time we know that we are on the right path when we are just more and more in love with life as we go along. I agree with you that any religious tradition will take us to the Heart of God when we follow its path with an open heart and an open mind. Thank you for your good wishes. As we bless each other, we all grow stronger!

Hi sophie! I doubt you are even still reading these comments since i noticed they were from last year but i thought id give it a shot. I happened across your blog because ive been going through some things that i havent had very much support or guidance with that i would love to get your personal opinion on. I feel odd even saying it, that i may be a healer, but ive been on an intense journey of self for years now, and i suppose some confirmation would be nice. Thank you for your blog. It is still helping people in 2013 🙂

Hi. Wow. I’ve been through SO much and it’s so clear yet so grey. I have always been intuitive and felt “different” however, after a near death accident and following emolism I am forever awakened. I channel, I have “messages”, I have healing hands. I changed my life entirely and am now at a loss and struggling with my calling and real life. I would love to speak with you/email with you with regards to how to find balance and acceptance of such a strong and undeniable shift in concuiosness that’s made me think it’s been a curse, at times, more than a blessing. Feeling lost and yet so close.

I would love to know if I am supposed to be healing I have always felt ‘different’ but there is a huge side of me that feels that I could be reading into something that isn’t there.

I know I am different but I don’t know in which way and if I could benefit from it? Growing up as a teenager I’ve been through a lot of hard times, neglect and abuse. I am very depressed most days of the week and I know that I am a very sensitive cancerian to the world around me. I even take the pain of others onto myself because I really do feel for a person/animal. People often open up to me and let me understand their problems in which I will try to give them the best advice that I can to help them at the time, also understanding that everybody is different and feels differently.

I am understanding the world in different ways including people and the negative and positive energies around me.
i have been told I am a healer from a tarot reader and I would like to look further into how I can help others in a career that will best suit me, earn a living so I feel stable and supported and have others benefit from my work.
I just have no idea where to start, or what to do?
I’ve always been creative and have also completed a full beauty course but I don’t want to move further with it because its boring, i don’t want to do it all day everyday.
I feel stuck because i’m at the age where I should know my path.
I’m trying to get more positive, confident and relieve myself of the fog mentally but I don’t know where to turn or what to do to ensure myself a fulfilled happy life.
